“When you come looking for me, you’ll find me.”Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed.””- Jeremiah 29:13 (The Message)
The foremost reason for fasting should be to encounter God. God is our source; He is our everything. Everyone that encounters God become changed. So if you are dissatisfied with yourself as a Christian, and you are unable to effect a change by yourself, then it is time to chase after the Lord.
As we encounter Him, we are changed to be like Him: Fasting and prayer is a means of demonstrating our seriousness or desperation for Him. We go the extra mile to prove our hunger for Him. The proof of desire is pursuit.
When you fast and pray, you become more God conscious, your spirit-man is quickened and energized and your outward man is weakened and put under control. You are therefore more alert in your spirit, and more sensitive to God’s Spirit; your spiritual antenna is pulled out so you can pick divine signals more clearly and accurately.
While you are in prayer and fasting mode, there is a personal revival taking place within you, and you consequently desire to please God more and more. God’s reverential fear comes on you; and as a result, you hate what He hates and you live in obedience to Him.
Prayer and fasting gives you more courage to approach Him. It also helps you to live more with His awareness. By living with His awareness you lose living in fear and become more confident in confronting anything that is against you, and exercise your faith in Him for the impossible.
Fasting and prayer is a way of submitting yourself to God in worship. Our worship indicates enthroning His Lordship over our lives. It demonstrates honouring Him and adoring His majesty, His presence then comes and invades our lives.
“Therefore also now, says the Lord, turn and keep on coming to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning [until every hindrance is removed and the broken fellowship is restored].”- Joel 2:12 (Amplified Bible)
This is God’s recommendation to Christians who have had a broken relationship with Him, or felt distant from Him. Fasting and prayer is a means of showing repentance, acknowledging shortcomings and sacrificially turning back to God. It is a way of saying ‘I am sorry’. God enjoins us to keep on coming to Him in this way, regularly as a lifestyle. It is a way of contacting God’s grace and mercy, as you demonstrate a broken and contrite spirit. Consequently, you will lose appetite for vanities; you will lose your vulnerability to a life of disobedience.
There are forces working constantly to separate and keep us away from God, they work by stimulating and steering our passion for worldly pleasures, which are vanities that deaden our human spirit and disconnect it from the Spirit of God.
We must stand up and cooperate with the Spirit of God to keep our human spirit strong and ready to connect with God’s Spirit.
Remember, Jesus says ‘without me, you can do nothing’, in other words; you need Jesus more and more.
God Bless You!
