“Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?”- Psalm 85:6
The word revival is derived from two Latin words, re which means ‘again’ and vivo which means ‘to live’; the literal meaning is ‘to live again.’
Revival connotes a spiritual awakening that births a divine visitation on God’s people, a community or a people that have not known God. It is like putting fuel on a dying flame or fire. It is turning a dull light to a bright and glowing light.
Revival has to do with people who already have life; it is restoring fire into a people whose lives and zeal for the Lord seem to be ebbing away. It is changing a lukewarm disposition to a hot, firebrand attitude. It is to become fervent in Spirit; and to be on fire for God.
We all need revival, and it has to begin with our individual lives. This will in turn ignite the whole Church – the body of Christ with the fire of the Holy Spirit, thus presenting God in a form that will make Him irresistible to the whole world.
People, communities and nations shall be drawn to God, they shall rejoice as they find life, hope, joy, fulfilment, purpose, deliverance, salvation in God. They shall rejoice as they discover God’s love for mankind.
But for us to experience revival, it will begin with us taking some necessary steps:
We must turn away from the things that drive us away from God; these are the fire extinguishers. We must all individually reflect on our lives, and where found necessary, repent from secret sins; these are the “little foxes that spoil our vines.”
We must confess and turn away from ungodly habits that we are addicted to; these will rob us of intimacy with God.
We must lay aside every weight and sin that easily beset us; these will slow and weigh us down. We must empty ourselves of self and every form of carnality- the fruit of the flesh i.e. bitterness, pride, unforgiveness, gossip, sexual immorality. So that God can fill our lives with Himself.
A life of holiness is fundamentally important for anyone who wants to experience revival. No holiness, no presence of God; no righteousness, no anointing of the Holy Spirit; and without the Holy Spirit to fuel you and me, there will be no fire of revival.
“Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.”- Psalm 45:7
One secret of revival is a deep love for righteousness and passion for a life of holiness. The basis of divine exaltation in power and glory is righteousness and holy living. A vessel that God cannot touch or relate closely with on a constant basis cannot experience revival and cannot be used of God for revival.
So let us put our lives in order and God will honour our dedication to His cause.
God bless you!
